Tired of boring school? Elizabeth Giligan sure is...
We suggest a flight of the seagulls! At various times throughout the school year, Dr. Anderson, our beloved principal, will choose to fly the seagulls. Although a clever code, the seagulls originated with Gary Davis, the principal at GFH from 1990-1999, and 2002-2003.
In the late 80s, Mr. Davis was a dean with Mrs. Ikeda. The principal and vice-principal were away from the school one day, and Mr. Davis and Mrs. Ikeda wanted to show their control of GFH for the day. Mrs. Ikeda and Mr. Davis "happened to spot" a dangerous flock of seagulls headed for GFH. Obviously, the school needed to be evacuated for safety concerns. Ironically, the seagull spottings occurred five to ten minutes before the school day ended whenever the principal and vice-principal were absent. When Mr. Davis became principal himself in 1990, he continued the tradition. When he spotted something extraordinary or something that stuck out to him during the day, Mr. Davis would spot some seagulls to release the students for the day. After several other principals, Dr. Anderson re-instated the seagull sightings to maintain the GFH tradition.
